| The Corner Cabinet
The narrow empty corner beside the refrigerator took some time to figure out what to do with. The bookshelves hold cookbooks, there is a place for the microwave, thereby freeing up more counter space and cabinet space which serves as an appliance garage and storage for large pots and pans. This piece is finished in green milk paint outside and buckwheat milk paint inside. Milk paint is a great finish for painted, country style pieces. It has a unique look and it is durable. Shelves painted with it hold up to the wear of heavy cat iron skillets. Great stuff! The cabinet door has a bit of a story. It was the end of a wide poplar board from a piece I had done years before. It has a large cracked knot in it which made it unusable for anything I had built since. But I knew something would come along. Using a scrub plane to texture the surface, wood bleach, dyes and elbow grease to age the wood and hanging it on early American style rat tail hinges with a primitive iron ring and staple door pull turned the wide board with the unsightly defect into the perfect door for this corner. Notice the stone wall above the cabinet. Beth painted the rooster on it.
