Beth's Cabinets
My wife Beth and I live in a small, circa 1864 former schoolhouse. Storage space and work top area in the small but open kitchen area were not adequate when we moved in. A place to put the groceries was the first priority. The frame and panel maple pantry I designed and built measures just over 8' high, 52" wide and almost 2'deep. The door panels are decorative bird's eye maple, the door frames are finished in genuine milk paint. There is no plywood in this piece, it is solid maple. A large hand truck and 4 people were needed to move it down the hill from my shop and into the kitchen.
The cherry and oak island that I built next provided additional work surface area, and place for the silverware and useful shelf space. The cherry base and drawer front are finished with many coats of hand rubbed shellac and linseed oil. The quarter sawn oak top has a food safe, hand rubbed finish. The dovetailed maple drawer box glides on invisible under mount soft and self close drawer slides. The beauty of real wood is the way it patinas and gets even better looking over time.
